{"id":116,"date":"2011-02-02T20:51:14","date_gmt":"2011-02-02T20:51:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundexchangetampabay.com\/wordpress\/?p=116"},"modified":"2016-07-13T19:22:12","modified_gmt":"2016-07-13T19:22:12","slug":"the-emergence-of-long-play-1948","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.soundexchangetampabay.com\/index.php\/classic-vinyl-listening-experience\/history\/the-emergence-of-long-play-1948\/","title":{"rendered":"The Emergence of Long Play (1948)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>As I will define it, the <em>Classic Vinyl Listening Experience <\/em>began with the emergence of the 10\u201d and 12\u201d, 33 1\/3 rpm, Long Play, Micro-Groove, Vinyl Record in 1948, and its smaller sibling, the 7\u201d 45 rpm record, at about\u00a0that same time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I choose to start here because this is the technology that provided the two most important attributes of the listening experience that we seek:\u00a0a sufficiently long\u00a0playing time, and higher quality sound reproduction (High\u00a0Fidelity).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Prior to this time, music was played back primarily on a 10\u201d disc made of various materials.<\/strong> It rotated on a record player at approximately 78rpm, and due to the technical limitations you could get about four minutes of music on one side \u2014 with aural qualities that are not considered \u201cHi-Fidelity.\u201d\u00a0 And while this required \u201cactive listening,\u201d the experience was constantly being interrupted since the listener had to change the record every three or four minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So let\u2019s look at the importance of the 12\u201d 33 1\/3 rpm Long Play Micro-Groove Vinyl Record<\/strong> as it relates to our goal of defining the <em>Classic Vinyl Listening Experience<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>Its primary benefits were:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Extended playing time (to about 25 minutes per side), improved sound quality, and improved durability.\u00a0 The duration and quality improvement came from the ability to further miniaturize the groove in the record (Micro-Groove).\u00a0<strong>Micro-Grooves took up less space, so you could fit more onto the surface of a record.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The miniaturization also allowed for the revolutions per minute (rpm) to be slowed to 33 1\/3, which \u2014 along with its increased size to 12\u201d diameter (Long Play) \u2014 provided for the <strong>greatly increased\u00a0playing time.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>durability and quality improvement <\/strong>came primarily from the vinyl plastic material, which was superior to the previous materials used, and the improved accuracy of the smaller groove, since the stylus did not have to travel as far.\u00a0Records, which had been quite fragile, became very rugged and lasted much longer \u00a0\u2013 due in no small part to vinyl\u2019s ruggedness as a material, not to mention the record jacket that encased it for safe keeping and storage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I will define it, the Classic Vinyl Listening Experience began with the emergence of the 10\u201d and 12\u201d, 33 1\/3 rpm, Long Play, Micro-Groove, Vinyl Record in 1948, and its smaller sibling, the 7\u201d 45 rpm record, at about\u00a0that same time.
